"Silence is Golden"

The "Blue Angel" brought me to Sint Jansklooster, and also brought me back again. A few other rides were made, all in peace and quietness.

Quietness..... ?

It was a noisy little angel, one that clear and certainly LOUD declares "here I come, listen". It was loud and present, that noise. It disturbed me a bit, but what could I do ? A moment I thought about my old "Red Rascal", from wich more and more parts were donated from red to blue, that became moere and more a donor-bike. It didn't sound that much, those exhaust were fine. If I could .....

On a sunny saturday morning, in preparation of the operation, I olied the bolts and nut that hold the exhaust-pipes, with a litte penetrating oil. The oil had an hour or two to do its job, and I started to sort together the tools I would need.

At first I tried all the nuts and bolts, just a little bit, to see if the all would coörporate. If only one didn't want to turn, I had to cancel the whole surcery. Fortunatly all moved a little. The first pipe I removed was the left-one on the blue bike. After the clamp was loosened, and the support on the frame was removed, the pipe was still rock-solid fixed into the middle part of the exhaust system. Lengthy pushing up, down and sideways give a bit more movement on the pipe, until it, finally, came loose One down, three to go........

The left pipe on the red bike was next. It went, to my surprise, a lot easier. Soon that pipe was loose, I laid both together, and it was clear that the pipes from the red CX were in a much and much state that those from the blue one. And, in the pipe from the blau, something inside was loose.

... one ...

... together ...

With some sanding paper I removed the most dirt from the connection on the middle section of the exhaust, then took some vaseline, just enough to smoothen it up, and shove the newer pipe into his place. Nuts and bolds fixed, and ready. And now, before puttingt the defect pipe onto the red one, I wanted to have the right side from red to blue It took a great, very great effort to remove that pipe. It is mot usance when working on a CX, but at last I used a medium-sized hammer, to help me to remove the pipe. Very slowly, little by little, the pipe moved backwards, until it dropped out of the balancer.

One the red CX the right side pipe was easy removed. No hammer, only a soft and gentle rocking about, and there it was. Now this pipe was mounted onto the blue CX. After that the turn was on the red CX, to fix the old pipes, becouse without pipes the bike looks so weird. After all was bolted on, and checked and fiund secure, it was time for a testride. But I didn't came far away. On the driveway I heard a strange "kloing, kloing" for under the bike. What could it be ? I didn't see anything strange, but when I mounted the bike, again "kloing, kloing", a metallic sound. I looked again, and there I saw it. The spring lock washer pointed a little outwards, and touched the exhaustpipe.

... spring lock washer ...

By turning the spring lock washer down I solved the problem. The rest of the ride was silent, proportionately. And I feld muchy better, making not so much noise !
