A Fairing Re-Try

After the failure at Nijmegen I kept on searching for a fairing. Maybe the necessity was gone, now I've had my new helmet, but it would look so marvelous on my red CX. I was not active searching, but was waiting and looking wat should come up. In a discussion on the CX-forum, started by Hendrix, sudddenly gjkoops popped up with a fairing. After some e-mail and a phone-call we made an appointment. I would come and take a lok at the fairing on october 2.

Gerrit-Jan's adres is in Ermelo, but I find it outside the village, where the forest have left a a few small clearings for farmers to do the farming. Behind one of those farms I find the right housenumber, and rang the doorbell. Gerrit-Jan opened the door, and suggested that we should go see what we were talking about. Together we went to the shed. There I found a tophalf, lowers, and a huge collection of additional parts.

The fairing looks good and is sprayed in in a warm red color. The frame, that has to carry the tophalf is red. But that is nothing to worry about, because a second frame, black, but not mewly sprayed, comes with the fairing. The headlight, witch had to be taken out of the Honda'se standard headlightfitting can be easely hooked in the tophalf, and be reconnected.

With a special brache the tellerset, that normaly is hung inside the headlighthood, can be placed on the same location again.

To protect the topside of the tellerset, and to hide the wiring at the back of it, a instrument panel protectionhood is supplied. And if you made an mistake, that you can used a the second protectionhood.

The frame must the mounted on the nuts beside the radiator. The lowers are mounted to the top-half of the fairing.

The fairings lowers are also sprayed shining red, and also the protection rim that must be placed before the windscreen. All the newly sprayed parts are shining in the lamplight.

Gerrit-Jan has, as so many CX riders, besides his ride-CX also a donor-CX. If he needs a part, or some difficult mechanical problem shows up, the donor motor gets to the front, and the surgery will be practissed and/or the spare-part removed.

But....

Despite the fairing's very good condition, and the lengthy explanation by Gerrit-Jan, I encouter a smal problen. His ride-CX, and his donor-Cx both have an elevated steer. While we fit the fairing on his ride-CX I get the feeling that it will not fit my own Honda, due to the fact that my steer is a good bit lower. As I turn the steer of his CX, while Gerrit-Jan keeps the fairing in place, the feeling gets stronger. I position myself as if it was my own CX, and keep my hands as if I'm taking a curve. I know, it's not exact, not precise, but still........

No sale. To bad. I am very afraid it won't fit. Gerrit-Jan has no problems with it. We go inside the house and take a cup of coffee. After some conversation about bikes and other things I go home. I think it was a good decision.

And I will keep waiting unyil the right fairing finds me.....

................ or maybe a windscreen ?
