The "Blue Angel"

After I reluctandly had accepted that the "Red Rascal" probebly needed a new stator, I wend out in search of a stator, or an other CX. It was easyer to find antoher CX than to replace a stator......

On "Marktplaats" I found a blue CX, also one from 1978, and therefore also a 'z'. The tires were bad, and it need a bit of servicing. Tires were not a problem, because the wheels from the "Red Rascal" had nearly a new set of tires, and they would fit under that CX.

I am know to enthousiast overreacting, and there fore I asked Theo J. from Bennekom to join me, and, if nessecary, to critisize me and the CX. Thats one of the fine things on the Dutch Honda CX-500 club, most peolpe are ready to help, to ride CX. One helps anothers, and at the same time we keep nice motorcycles on the road.

On August 13 we went to lelystad, where a blue Cx was. There are an number of checkpoint that had to be checked, when buying a CX.

... Inspection ...

In Lelystad we saw the CX. At first sight it looked not bad, not bad at all. The tires, as said in the advertisement, were totally worn down, and needed soon to be replaced. The brake-disks looked good, and the brake-pads were also good. The stator was refitted in 2000, and that was a plus. The total kilometers stood at 75102, and the rear-bridge did not gave any sign of rust. We were told that the oilwashers from the frontsuspension were changed, a few months ago. It was time for a testride.

The CX started at once, without any funny noises, just an enormous deep sound. I drove around the parking lot, and from there up to the road. Fine, that goes we.... not. Just a meter or 20 up the road the CX hassitated and stopped. I don't get it, until I look inside the tank. Right. Without benzine it doesn't work. The tank was bone-dry and the motor had run these last minutes on the fuel from the carburators. Fortunatly there was a gasstation not to far away. First refuel, than try again.

At a second look at the CX I found that the rear wheel isn't okay anymore. There are pieces missing from the edge of the wheel, on the brake-side. But I wanted to change the wheels anyway.....

The motor pulles a little to the left, but it's only noticed when I don't hold the handlebars. It looks as all works as it should do, gas and breakes are working well.
So I pay the former owner, and took official ownership to the CX, that from now on will be kowm as the "Blue Angel". Theo and I drove back, to Lelystad, Harderwijk, Barneveld and finally Ede. There I parked the "Blue Angel" next to the "Red Rascal"

... "Blue Angel" beside the "Red Rascal" ...

it became clear during the ride home, that inside this "angel" was a little devil. Maybe it was better to change the engine fron blue to red, or maybe not. Swapping wheels was much easyer to do, and The advised me to try that, before doing difficult things with the engine.

We found that the exhaustpipes on this CX were not that good. The outside looks fine, but the inside is loose. That gives that specific dark sound. It is a bit of a setback, and all the minus-point make this CX a little expensive.

The great benefit from this "Blue Angel" compared to the "Red Rascal" is that the "Angel" ALWAYS starts, and the "Rascal" most of the time not.

Now the rebuild : Rascal to Angel, or Angel to Rascal ? What will eventualy become the best, and riding, CX ?
